Singlehood, Hanging Out, Hooking Up, and Cohabitation
This chapter focuses on the aspects of singlehood and the ââ¬Å"benefitsâ⬠of it as well as the downs. The Primary advantages of singlehood are the freedom that is possessed and the control over their own life. Some of the social movements which promoted singlehood are: ââ¬â The sexual revolution movement: involved openness about sexuality and permitted intercourse outside marriage. ââ¬â The womenââ¬â¢s movement: Emphasized equality in education, employment and income for women. ââ¬â The gay liberation movement: Provided support for a lifestyle consistent with oneââ¬â¢s sexual orientation. There are different types of singles in the US there is the Never married singles, Divorced singles, Widowed singles. Being single has some costs; individuals who are single are more likely to contract deceases or STIs. Women are also more likely to contract STIs from men, than men are from women. There are many ways to finding a partner such as, hanging out which is getting together, in groups, it might often be referred as ââ¬Å"Testing the waters. â⬠Another way is hooking up, in other words, casual sex, which has no emotion behind it and no plans of seeing each other again. There is also other ways to find a partner such as using the Internet or video chatting. One way that can also be helpful is speed dating which consists of having multiple dates at once in a couple of minutes. This procedure can be helpful because both women and men can meet and socialize multiple people in a certain amount of time instead of taking the whole evening just for one date. Dating after divorce could be a little challenging and cal also have a few problems; the way they date could be completely different than when they first did. They tend to use the Internet for new partners, there are fewer potential partners, and there is a higher change of them contracting STIs. There are different types of marriages around the globe for example the Chinese have this so called ââ¬Å"Blind Marriagesâ⬠where none the bride or broom groom arenââ¬â¢t allowed to see each other until the actual wedding. Cohabitation is living together before marriage. There is also different name for it such as, Duration of the relationship, Frequency of Overnight Visits, Emotional or Sexual Nature of the Relationship and Sex of the Partners. As well as there are different names of cohabitation there are also different types of it. ââ¬â Here and now- Money Savers- Rebellious Cohabitates ââ¬â Testers- Pension Partners- Marriage Never ââ¬â Engaged- Security Blanket Cohabitates Cohabitating has its pros and cons some of the advantages of it are: Sense of well-being, Delayed marriage, Knowledge about self and partner, and Safety. The disadvantages are: Feeling used or tricked, Problems with parents, Economic disadvantages, Effects on children, and other issues. Common law marriage is when couples that wanted to be married did not have easy or convenient access to legal authorities. My personal Response I believe that everything that was presented in this chapter has very informative features and some or most people could relate to. Personally I donââ¬â¢t have a lot of experience in this field because Iââ¬â¢m not at the level where I feel like Iââ¬â¢m ready to move out and cohabitate. I know for a fact that some day itââ¬â¢ll happen and I might acquire some features that might not be so suitable, but by reading this chapter I have a broader understanding of what it takes, and the benefits that cohabitating brings and the disadvantages as well. I think that the ways of finding a partner are pretty interesting because even thought Iââ¬â¢m not trying to look for a partner yet, it could relate to a whole lot of people like myself. Hanging out is a pretty common thing to do and everybody does it, for the sake of finding someone, to have that feeling that your not alone or just self-satisfaction. There are the times where casual sex is ââ¬Å"availableâ⬠, for the lack of a better word, and often times cannot be given up, I guess its overwhelming? Something that also called my attention was speed dating. I think that speed dating could be a fun and sociable event that might even change lives for the better of the worse. One more advantage that I would add to cohabitation, besides the book ones, would be that you can always count on that person that you choose to be there for you through the good and the bad, someone that you can talk to and ignore the physical attraction at times and exchange thoughtful words that could make the cohabitating experience better.

Grant/Lee a Comparison and Contrast Essay
Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee are two of the most effective military leaders in American history. These men have become symbolic of the two nations at conflict during the Civil War. Both had very different backgrounds and personalities that caused them to differ in their military leadership and accomplishments. Even though General Lee would surrender his army to General Grant, Lee throughout the course of the war proved himself to be a better military leader. The childhood of Robert Edward Lee played a pivotal role in the way he would see the world as a man. Lee was born into an aristocratic family of Virginia with a deeply rooted American history. Richard Henry and Francis Lightfoot Lee, Robert E. Leeââ¬â¢s uncles, helped draft resolutions that would lead to the Declaration of Independence, both would sign it1. Leeââ¬â¢s father, Henry ââ¬Å"Lighthorse Harryâ⬠Lee III was a revolutionary war hero and one of George Washingtonââ¬â¢s most dependable fellow countrymen . In 1771, Washington, also from Virginia, wrote: ââ¬Å" I know of no country that can produce a family all distinguished and clever men, as our Lees.â⬠2 Leeââ¬â¢s mother and father were strong influences in his life for very different reasons. Leeââ¬â¢s father would define everything Lee did not want to be. Lighthorse Harry lacked self-control and failed to take care of the family. Ruined by failed financial ventures, Leeââ¬â¢s father would be sent to debtorââ¬â¢s prison. His mother, Anne Hill Carter Lee would raise young Robert to love God, to serve God and to serve his country. Leeââ¬â¢s rearing helped him to develop the highest standards of honor, self-denial, self-control and duty that would earn respect from both friends and enemies.3 Ulysses S. Grant came from a more humble upbringing. Like Lee, Grant traces his ancestry deep into American history in his memoirs. Grantââ¬â¢s ancestors settled in Massachusetts in 1630.4 Grantââ¬â¢s father, Jesse R. Gran t came from a broken family and was fostered by the parents of John Brown. 5 The same John Brown that would attempt to start a slave rebellion by attacking the United States armory at Harperââ¬â¢s Ferry in 1859. Men under the leadership of then Colonel Robert E. Lee ended that raid.6 Grant, was not born into the land owning aristocracy like Lee, his family was frontier men. Grant ââ¬Å"â⬠¦had come up the hard wayâ⬠¦No man was born to anything, except perhaps to a chance to show how far he could rise. Life was competition (Catton, para 5).â⬠7 Grantââ¬â¢s competitive upbringing would give him the motivation to push forward and the demand results needed to defeat Lee. Robert E Lee would carry the lessons he learned as a child with him to the Military Academy at West Point. While attending West Point, Lee was very studious and did not join 8other cadets for evenings at the local taverns. General Lee graduated second in his class at West Point and received no demerits for misconduct. This record has never been matched and will not likely ever be achieved again. By graduating with honors, Lee was assigned to the United States Army Corps of Engineers. The time Lee spent with the Army Corps of Engineers gave him valuable knowledge of different types of terrain and fortification constructions that would serve him well in the Civil War.9 The childhood of Ulysses S. Grant would also affect him at West Point. Grant was not interested in a military career; he was more interested in agriculture.10 It was Grantââ¬â¢s father who requested his appointment to West Point.11 Grant stated in his memoirs, ââ¬Å"A military life had no charms for me, and I had not the faintest idea of staying in the army even if I should be graduated, which I did not expect (Grant p19).â⬠12 Grant spent most of his time at West Point reading novels and avoiding ââ¬Å"â⬠¦books related to the course of studies (Grant pg 20).â⬠13 Unlike Lee, Grant would not excel at West Point. Grant graduated 21 out of 39 in his class, just below average.14 The Mexican American War would be both Lee and Grantââ¬â¢s first battle. Lee and Grant would both serve un der General Winfield Scott, a man whom they both admired, during his campaign to Mexico City. General Scott saw greatness in Lee and stated his ââ¬Å"â⬠¦success in Mexico was largely due to the skill, valor, and undaunted energy of Robert E. Lee.â⬠15 Scott was also heard commenting a few years later that; ââ¬Å"Lee is the greatest military genius in America.â⬠16 Grant, only a first lieutenant, did not get an opportunity to show much leadership. Grant did however serve with valor. At the Battle of Monterey, Grant would gain some respect among his peers by successfully carrying much needed ammunition to his regiment while under fire.17 During the Civil War, Lee and Grant would implement skills learned while under the command of General Winfield Scott. In the spring of 1861 as the nation leaned toward Civil War, both Grant and Lee would be forced to make very difficult decisions. Grant would only have to decide between being a patriot or a traitor. In a letter to Grantââ¬â¢s father he wrote: ââ¬Å"There are but two parties now, Traitors & Patriots and I want hereafter to be ranked with the latter. . . (Grant p 957)â⬠18 Lee was torn between a successful career in the United States Army, his devotion to the Union, an appointment as commander of the Union forces and the love he had for his family and homeland. In a letter to his sister , Lee wrote: ââ¬Å" With all my devotion to the Unionâ⬠¦I have not been able to make up my mind to raise my hand against my relatives, my children, my home. 19 The decisions these two men made would send them on a collision course in one of the most costly wars the country has every waged. Throughout the Civil War, Robert E Lee would prove himself to be unmatched in leadership. When Lee took control of the Army of Northern Virginia in June of 1862, the Union army ââ¬Å"â⬠¦was thundering at the city gatesâ⬠¦(Lee p150)â⬠20 of the Confederate capital of Richmond. In three months, Lee would achieve what his predecessor General Joseph E. Johnston could not. Lee defeated the invading Union army and turned the war in favor of the South. It would take President Lincoln almost one year to find any competition for General Lee. That competition would be General Grant and the vast resources the North offered him. The vast resources and the advanced railroad system of the North would give Grant the advantage he needed over Lee. In a letter to Confederate President Jefferson Davis, Lee expressed his concern that ââ¬Å"â⬠¦Every train brings recruits, and it is stated that every available regiment at the North is added to itâ⬠¦(Lee p108)â⬠21 The Army of Northern Virginiaââ¬â¢s lack of provisions were ââ¬Å"â⬠¦so greatâ⬠¦I cannot see how we can operate with our present supplies (Lee, p 108).22 Before Lee ever met Grant on the battlefield he was trying to prepare for multiple retreats that would allow him to resupply his army. Lee pleaded with Jefferson Davis that ââ¬Å"Every exertion should be made to supply the depots at Richmond and at other points (Lee, p 108).â⬠23 Grant carelessly used his resources to attack Lee and ââ¬Å"â⬠¦after thirty days of marchingâ⬠¦fighting and a with a loss of more than sixty thousand men, General Grantâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ 24 arrived at Petersburg, ââ¬Å"â⬠¦which he could have doneâ⬠¦without the loss of a single man.â⬠25 The sixty thousand men that were expendable to Grant was more than Lee had in his entire Army of Northern Virginia. Lee eventually was forced to surrender his army of ââ¬Å"â⬠¦less than eight thousand menâ⬠¦to Grantââ¬â¢s army of 150,000â⬠¦Ã¢â¬ 26 Prior to the surrender Union officers had ââ¬Å"â⬠¦always estimated your [Lee] force at about seventy thousand men.â⬠27 The leadership displayed by Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee throughout their military careers is directly related to their childhood and education at West Point. Grantââ¬â¢s childhood made him competitive but his lack of interest in the curriculums at West Point would set him back militarily. If Grant did not have the expendable resources that were available to his Union Army, he would have failed against Leeââ¬â¢s ability to fight with such limited resources. Leeââ¬â¢s self struggle to lead by example combined with his devotion to duty and the men in his army resulted in many victories over impossible odds. Lee did not surrender to Grantââ¬â¢s leadership traits; Lee ââ¬Å"â⬠¦was compelled to yield to overwhelming numbers and resources (Lee p 138)â⬠28 1 James A. Comparing Two Adverts
Compare the two adverts The two diverse adverts I have selected to analyse consists of a Rimmel London mascara advert and a vegetarian ââ¬Å"fight the fatâ⬠advert. I will discuss in detail the purpose of each advert, the layout, Language and audience amongst many other qualities these two adverts consist of. The purpose of Rimmel Londons advert is to inform females who are specifically interested in mascara of the Rimmel Londons ââ¬Å"NEW EXTREAME BLACK MAGNIFââ¬â¢EYES MASCARAâ⬠. In doing so this advert is very persuasive as they would like their product to be bought. In comparison, the second advert annualised, is a healthy eating organisation. This PETA. org. UK advert is being used in order to persuade adults (someone other than a ââ¬Å"childâ⬠) not to feed children meat as it ââ¬Å"is child abuseâ⬠. Moreover this advert is being used to advertise the organisation supporting this claim and inform the audience of their web address. The objective to Peta. org. uk is to deter children from eating meat and communicate the idea that meat has a consequence on a childââ¬â¢s health and adult should not feed them it as they are causing them harm. Likewise, Women aged between eighteen and above are the targeted audience for Rimmel Londonââ¬â¢s product. I am given this impression as Kate Moss; a successful ââ¬Ëcoolââ¬â¢ style and beauty icon (many men love and women look up to) is the model being used to display and promote this product. This is an advantage as it would boost Rimmel Londonââ¬â¢s sales due to the fact that many women would purchase this product satisfied with Kateââ¬â¢s involvement and simply in order to feel beautiful, like Kate moss and model material. As with the Peta organisation advertisement, the audience this advert is being subjected to is everyone, although it is mainly for anyone other than a ââ¬Å"childâ⬠yet imperative for parents. This advert uses the burger which is a common unhealthy food yet favourite to some, to attract the attention of their audience, everyone. However, a wide eyed obese child eager to consume the burger is being used in order to attract the attention of other children and parents. This image along with the adverts heading is very ironic and would shock parents above all as the child in the image is eating a substance which is ââ¬Å"abusingâ⬠them. ââ¬Å"Feeding kidââ¬â¢s meatâ⬠is not often related to ââ¬Å"child abuseâ⬠although parents will relate to the image greatly for they would compare their child/children to the boy crossing the ine of morbid obesity in the picture. Popular Rimmel London mascara advert uses a wide range of persuasive techniques in order to boost the sales of their product. Such techniques include statistics, as the advert states ââ¬Å"70% MORE VERTICAL LASHESâ⬠. This statement is a large claim and readers would be extremely amused by it , furthermore it is produced in capital letters in order to gather the readerââ¬â¢s attention and compliment its extremity, as with other statements in this advert. The name in which the product is labelled with plays with words cleverly, giving the impression that who ever purchases this product will immediately have magnificent eyes ââ¬Å"MAGNIFââ¬â¢EYESâ⬠this clever conjunction additionally encourages the ââ¬Å"BREAK THROUGH EYE MAGNIFIER BRUSHâ⬠Rimmel London have achieved. Standard English is the language used in the two adverts, however the statement ââ¬Å"Feeding kids meat is child abuseâ⬠is written in as a matter of fact and not opinion. By doing so, this misleads readers along with being very controversial, as not many would agree with it. However now that many readers (parents) are informed of the negative opinions regarding meat, it is there obligation to research this claim and find out whether or not they are abusing children (their child). As this advert promotes healthy eating ââ¬Å"FIGHT THE FATâ⬠is a part of this advert slogan. This statement is not only alliteration but also a representation of the type of food they are encouraging, vegetables. The use of alliteration lightens the situation yet ââ¬Å"GO VEGâ⬠gives the impression of a protest which portrays the determination and seriousness of the situation. ââ¬Å"BLACK ON BLACKâ⬠again is the heading and example of alliteration used in Rimmel Londons Mascara advert. This phrase is not only used to describe the extreme colour of the mascara but also used to describe mutual violence between the African races, as a result the use of this phrase could trick a quick reader of African heritage as it relates to them, and therefor this advert would be receiving the attention of a wider audience. The choice of adjectives and nouns are to the highest standard. An impression of a fresh product is what I am given when I am presented with the word ââ¬Å"NEW EXTREAMEâ⬠. The Audience would feel honoured to buy a product which is so recent and exceedingly great in degree. ââ¬Å"Outstanding lash liftâ⬠the use of this adjective marks the excellence in which this mascara lifts your eye lashes. By purchasing this product, women would believe that their eyelashes would extend as long as Kateââ¬â¢s (in the advert) when applying the ascara; although the picture has been edited by Photoshop and is in fact not her real eyelashes. ââ¬Å"DOUBLE HITâ⬠also indicates to the audience that they are purchasing two in one; the mascara does not only achieve length, but also volume making the audience feel privileged enough to purchase this product. Similarly the ââ¬Å"BREAKTHROUGH EYE MAGNIFIER BRUSHâ⬠gives the impression that in order to make this product Rimmel London h ave overcome a restriction and have in turn achieved success which will allow their further progress. The writing is placed clearly with maximum of two rows at the bottom of the page in insure Kate Mossââ¬â¢s face is not hidden and make the reading easier for readers. As for the healthy eating advert white is the chosen background colour given. In doing so the audienceââ¬â¢s full attention is directed to the writing making the background not at all a distraction but complimentary to the writing. A large font size is used in order for readers at first glance to read the statement. Two font sizes are used in this add one smaller than the other. The natural colours used are red, blue and green in order to portray the healthiness in the subject. The website is highlighted in order for it to be clear and concise for the audience in order to get in contact with the organisation. However the feminine use of the colour red (both in the background and font) not only attracts their attention of the Rimmel Londons audience, but also sets the scene and feel of this mascara making it an irresistibly, feminine and lustful object every women should own and not be without. The Black circle used in the background of Kate in addition gives a hypnotising effect to in order the audience to be given the impression that once this mascara is applied everyone will be mesmerised. The magnified image of the mascara brush gives the audience a scientific perspective into how minuet the brush bristles are making them even more wondrous. The Small font size is ironic as it complements the mascaras objective, whereas the use of white font is given in order to make the reading simple for the audience and is also used to highlight ââ¬Å"Rimmelâ⬠to give awareness of the mascara brand. In conclusion the two adverts analysed contrast greatly, factors including the amount of design (Rimmel more than Peta), purpose of each advert, audience which the two adverts are aimed at alongside many more important factors, although the two adverts fit under the category of health and beauty. In my opinion the two adverts where indeed correct in how they communicated to their objective to the chosen audience making both as successful as each other.

Intro to Art - Essay Example Claude Monet belonged to the Impressionist genre of artists who aimed to preserve ââ¬Å"the visual freshness of the first fleeting momentâ⬠(Heinrich 32) of a scene. In his portrayal, the artist did not categorise or differentiate the various objects in the scene through traditional artistic principles. Monetââ¬â¢s subject matter on canvas were the first impressions of a scene, composed of ââ¬Å"blocks of colours, surface patterns, and the very air as defined by lightâ⬠(Heinrich 32). The artist termed his concept as lââ¬â¢instantaneite, and made it his lifeââ¬â¢s work. However, he experienced despair at times, due to the unresolvable contradiction that is inherent in the aim to preserve permanently the passing moment. Boulevard des Capucines (Fig.1 below) is a distinctive portrayal of the busy Paris boulevard from an aerial perspective, viewed through the cold and damp air of winter (Nelson-Atkins, 2008). The painting portrays crowds hurrying along the pavement, and has the ââ¬Å"blurred schematic look of an early photographâ⬠(Ruhrberg et al 7). The brushwork of all Impressionist paintings contributed to their looking like early photographs which had a coarse-grained texture. Further, Impressionist paintings emphasized light effects in the scene; and this is evident in Monetââ¬â¢s flickering representation of haze and light using vibrant dabs of paint for the snow-covered ground, the people and the background images. This is supported by Forgione (p.671) who believes that in this painting human bodies look hazy, distorted, and are ââ¬Å"reflective surfaces whose integrity is compromised by penetrating atmospheric vibrationsâ⬠. Other typically impressionist features of the painting are the blue shadows and the depiction of pedestrians using bold, individual brush strokes. The forms are made to appear blurred in order to represent motion with people walking briskly in the cold air. Nelson-Atkins (2008) reiterates that Monet depicted the elusive quality of movement with

Environment policy - Assignment Example Initiatives to better preserve this planet, adopting a ââ¬Å"greenerâ⬠perspective, and taking steps to research and beneficially slow the damage we contribute to the planet is a good thing. There are several things that tend to stand in the way of solid government policies and interventions on this issue. Firstly, many people do not take the concern seriously. They often disregard the topicââ¬â¢s discussions to the ramblings of paranoid conservationists and ââ¬Å"tree huggers.â⬠Others disregard the concerns, founded or not, because the potential, consequential, repercussions of environmental issues will, likely, not culminate into anything serious enough to affect day to day living for generations to come; which, overall, could be considered rather selfish and definitely short-sighted. Politically, it is harder to get full support on initiatives because different states have a differing level of economic loss and gain when it comes to environmental policies. Both, Democrats and Republicans, representing states that have heavier fossil fuel productions dispute any legislature and are far less likely to support environmental interventions.("New York Times") Sev eral states have taken upon themselves to implement their own policies and initiatives to encourage a more environmentally conscious and beneficial approaches. Environmental issues are very real, they do matter, and they are worthy of taking seriously in order to preserve this planet that we all live on. In the end, however, it is not an issue simply of states, or individual countries, it is a global issue. But Americaââ¬â¢s policies, often, set an example for others around the world, perhaps greater action on our part would result in greater responses worldwide. I respect your opinion and I have to say that I agree with you that not everything that leads to planetary damage can be laid solely on the actions of humankind. However, human beings readapt their environments to suit their
Entrepreneurship and Venture Creation Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3000 words - 1
Entrepreneurship and Venture Creation - Essay Example There are several theories that explain the multidimensional concept of entrepreneurship. For example, the psychological theories that focuses on the mental and emotional factors characteristic of entrepreneurs. In the classical and neo-classical period, the terms entrepreneurship and entrepreneur were perceived to be similar (Evans 2014:48). The theories explaining entrepreneurship can be divided into three broad categories that are the psychological aspects, sociological theories and economic principles. However, scholars in the discipline of economics are the main contributors to the development of the entrepreneurship concept. In the neo-classical theories, entrepreneurship does not exploit the business field. Based on the earlier concepts of market equilibrium, neo-classical theories argue that firms in the market obtain their profit margin based on their levels of labor. The neo-classical theories also argue that entrepreneurs who put in more effort compared to their counterpar ts in turn obtain more profits (Evans 2014:48). The key limitation in the neo-classical theories is that they undermined the role of management and decision making in the success of the firm in the market. The theories also focused on the knowledge of the entrepreneurs and the nature of the business that an entrepreneur carries out. For example, if an entrepreneur is more knowledgeable in a particular type of business compared to their counterpart, then the entrepreneur is likely to be successful.
